About Camp Winthers

Celebrating 60+ years of Making Mountain Memories

Nestled three miles south of Soda Springs, on historic Donner Summit, Camp Winthers has been a hub of environmental education since 1957. Owned and operated by the San Juan Unified School District, the camp sits beside one of the most picturesque lakes in the Sierra Nevada.

Our facilities embrace the rustic charm of Camp Winthers’ tradition while ensuring comfort. Campers will sleep on cots in tent cabins and enjoy wholesome, delicious meals. While summer temperatures range between 45°F and 80°F, campers should come prepared for cooler or wet weather. Showers are available and highly recommended.

At Camp Winthers, we provide a well-rounded outdoor adventure. Campers will participate in a variety of activities, including hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, archery, disc golf, gaga ball campfires, skits, overnight campouts, and a low-elements challenge course. These activities ensure a balance of mental and physical engagement, fostering personal growth and connection with nature.

Safety is our top priority. Our highly trained staff are committed to creating a safe, fun, and meaningful experience for every camper, with supervision provided at all times.

In addition to our summer programs, Camp Winthers is also available for rent! We proudly offer our facilities to organized school groups and other non-profit organizations, providing the perfect setting for educational retreats, workshops, or outdoor experiences.
